For calculating BMI using the US units, the weight needs to be in pounds and the height in inches. It is determined by the ratio of the weight in pounds multiplied by 703 and the square of height in inches. If the height is in feet then this formula can be modified as weight in pounds multiplied by 4.88 and then this result divided by the value of the square of the height in feet. For instance, the body mass index of a person with a height of 6 feet and 1 inch and the weight 172 pounds would come out to be 22.7 when rounded out to a single decimal. Bu using the metric units the formula for BMI changes to the ratio of weight in kilograms and the square of the person’s height in meters.
