Body mass index
Body mass index is the most common method that is used to determine whether the person has a healthy weight or not. This particular index is used worldwide and is most accepted by everyone. Most weight loss programs are based on this method. It is actually a measure which uses both weight and height and is commonly applied to both males and females. The Body mass index or BMI as it is commonly referred to works on pre-specified values which can determine whether a person is obese or underweight. It was devised by the Belgian anthropometrist Quetelet in 1996. Most of the measurements are taken in normal metric values with the weight being measured in pounds or kilograms and the corresponding height in inches or meters.
Body mass index is used to determine the body fat which in turn determines obesity which is the leading culprit behind many incurable and life threatening diseases. BMI is the ratio of the person’s weight either in pounds or kilograms and the square of the height in inches or meters. A BMI of value of less than or equal to 17.9 determines person is malnourished or is underweight. Normal weight is depicted by a BMI value of 18 to 25, similarly if the BMI is at value of 40 or higher it indicates that the person is severely overweight and is at the highest risk of cardiovascular ailments.
The body mass index has been used as standard reference since it came into existence though there are many facts which work against these values. The facts which go against this value is that this ratio does not take into account the waist circumference or the forms of fat, owing to this other methods are also being used to calculate the healthy weight limit of individuals. BMI for kids is also important in determining whether they are growing in a healthy manner.
But still Body mass index is the ratio which can be most easily determined and with many online sites offering a free platform to calculate this ratio, it is perhaps the most inexpensive. It is this reason that many still relies on BMI as the most accepted measure to determine if a person is healthy or not.
