In today's look-conscious world, people always wish to remain apt on the scales of weight so as to look slim and beautiful from the outside. Obesity is no less than a curse for everyone who wishes to lose weight and become perfect on the weight scales. Today people have become more conscious about their body weight then they used to be some years back.

With so many ways of measuring obesity one such method that can help in comparing one's weight with their height is BMI. BMI or Body Mass Index is the measurement of a person's weight and height, which is calculated by a formula that entails dividing a person's weight in kilograms with the square of their height measured in meters. The BMI measurement helps a person's weight to be standardized as per their height and even helps in comparison of the heights of different individuals.

The BMI is a measurement of obesity, but remember that this is not an accurate method to measure obesity of certain groups of people, such as old people, athletes, youngsters, etc. This is contributed due to many underlying factors including the metabolism, size and the body lean mass percentage of a person, which altogether affects the calculate BMI to a great extent.

Also, one more factor that makes BMI not an apt measurement of one's obesity is that, the BMI calculation does not differentiate between the body fat and the muscle fat thus is an over or underestimate of the body fat overall. Also, athletes especially football players, due to their high BMI are categorized as obese even though they are not so in real.

So, BMI is measurement of obesity in an individual, but not an accurate one. This method however also categories people who are overweight as obese, but also aids in providing the person an overview that how hard he /she will need to work and exercise in order to become balanced on the weight and of course the Body Mass scale.

So, know your BMI to get a rough knowledge about your body mass especially if you are too overweight, but never use it as a sole judgment to finalize on your decision of being overweight or obese.
